Usually a single worn part is the whole problem, and one visit puts it right. A cracked body is the exception, and we'll say so plainly when a replacement is the smarter spend. The full fixture range sits on our tap and toilet plumbing page.

Which Part Fails in Your Tap

Two tap types seal the water in different ways: a washer presses onto a valve seat in a washer tap, and a mixer closes with a ceramic disc cartridge.

A washer tap is the older pattern: separate handles for hot and cold, each turning several times. A rubber washer rides the spindle's foot on the jumper valve and presses against the seat to shut the water off. Perished rubber is what makes the tap drip.

A mixer blends hot and cold through a single lever, most often a quarter turn. Inside sits a cartridge built from two ceramic discs that slide across one another to open and shut the flow. Wear or grit kills the discs, and the cartridge is then swapped whole for one matched to the tap's make, because fittings vary between brands.

A stiff handle that still seals points to grit or wear inside the spindle or cartridge rather than any leak.

Where the Leak Shows and What It Means

The spot where water turns up points to the part that's failed, so note it before you call.

  1. Spout dripping, even fully closed

the sealing part is gone. That's the washer or seat on an older tap, or the cartridge inside a mixer.

  2. Water around the handle while water flows

an O-ring or the spindle seal up top has perished.

  3. Wet under the basin or bench

O-rings again, a connection below that's come loose, or a crack through the body.

Plenty of taps have no isolation valve at the fixture. The stop tap on the meter turns clockwise to shut the house down. Check first that no appliance, a hot water system included, needs the supply while the water is off.

When an Old Tap Is Past Repair in Hamilton

What drives the price is the tap type, the part it needs, the seat and body condition, and how easily the supply shuts off. The number of taps done in one visit counts as well. You receive a fixed quote after we've inspected, never a guess.

Some taps are beyond saving. A body cracked right through, heavy corrosion, a seat too damaged for a new washer to seal on, or a drip that outlives fresh parts all point to a replacement. Fitting one is licensed work, and the QBCC guide itself gives a whole new tap as its example beyond the householder's list.

The hill villas on the older estates still run their original galvanised water lines, so a worn washer often sits on a seat just as tired. Repairs there lean towards replacement more often than the tap's age alone suggests.

Down near Northshore Riverside Park, the apartment towers hold younger fittings, and area-level approvals ran at 17 dwellings in 2021-22, so new tapware keeps arriving. Isolation in a tower can mean a building valve rather than one at the fixture, which shapes the job before we start.

For the cistern side of the room, see toilet repairs for running and refilling faults, or toilet installation for fitting a new suite.

Who May Repair a Tap in Queensland

Only one tap job is unregulated in Queensland: the QBCC lets anyone with the right knowledge and skill replace a tap's jumper valve or washer. Standards still apply to that job. Every other repair counts as minor work for a QBCC licensee, without a permit and without a Form 4.

A dripping tap in a rental is a routine repair, because tenancy law lists only certain faults as emergencies. The tenant tells the owner or manager, and tenancy law then requires the tap to be fixed within a reasonable time. If nothing happens, Form 11 (Notice to remedy breach) starts a seven-day clock for the owner or manager.

Questions About Dripping Taps and Mixers

Call (07) 3523 6484

How do I stop my tap from dripping?

The sealing part is what gets replaced: a washer in a washer tap, a ceramic disc cartridge in a mixer. The QBCC counts only the washer and its jumper valve as unregulated work you may do yourself. Every other repair, including a new tap, is for a licensed plumber.

Why is my tap still dripping when I turn it off?

The sealing part has worn out or been damaged. On a washer tap the culprit is the washer, or the seat under it. On a mixer the ceramic disc cartridge has worn and needs replacing with the correct model for the make.

What makes a mixer tap leak from the base?

Worn O-rings are the usual cause, or a connection under the tap that has come loose. A crack through the body does it too. We isolate the water and check each one before quoting.

Is replacing a ceramic cartridge a licensed job in Hamilton?

Yes, a cartridge sits outside the QBCC's unregulated list, so the swap counts as minor work a QBCC licensee performs, with no permit and no Form 4. Every job is done by a licensed plumber.

How many litres can a dripping tap waste?

Thousands of litres can go to waste from one slowly dripping tap over a year. That volume runs through your Urban Utilities meter and lands on the bill. Concealed leak relief doesn't extend to water a tap wastes, so the owner carries the loss.
